The Ascension
Jesus went up to heaven and sits at God's right hand - completing His earthly mission and beginning His heavenly reign
✨ Quick Summary
This article explores one of the fundamental dogma of the Catholic faith. Understanding these core beliefs helps deepen our relationship with God and strengthens our spiritual journey.
Have you ever watched a rocket launch? The dramatic moment when it breaks free from Earth's gravity and soars into space? Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus had His own dramatic departure - but instead of needing a rocket, He simply rose up to heaven by His own power. This wasn't just a spectacular exit; it was the beginning of a new phase in God's plan for humanity.
What the Church Teaches
The Catholic Church teaches that:
- Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after His resurrection
- He ascended body and soul - not just His spirit
- He now sits at the right hand of the Father
- He reigns as King over all creation
- He prepares a place for us in heaven
The Ascension completes Jesus' earthly mission and begins His heavenly ministry.
What Happened That Day
The Final Instructions
Before ascending, Jesus:
- Commissioned the apostles to spread the Gospel
- Promised the Holy Spirit would come
- Assured them: "I am with you always"
- Blessed them with raised hands
The Ascent
"As they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight" (Acts 1:9). Picture this:
- Jesus rising without any machinery
- Disciples watching in awe
- A cloud receiving Him (representing God's presence)
- Angels appearing with a message
The Promise
Two angels told the amazed disciples: "This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go" (Acts 1:11).
Why Jesus Had to Leave
It might seem strange - why leave after just coming back? But the Ascension was necessary:
1. To Send the Holy Spirit
Jesus said: "It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you" (John 16:7). The Spirit couldn't come in fullness until Jesus was glorified.
2. To Prepare Our Home
"In my Father's house are many rooms... I go to prepare a place for you" (John 14:2). Jesus is getting heaven ready for us!
3. To Be Our High Priest
Jesus continually intercedes for us before the Father. He shows His wounds as proof of His sacrifice and pleads our case.
4. To Rule as King
From heaven, Jesus rules over:
- The entire universe
- The Church
- Every human heart that accepts Him
- Angels and saints
5. To Be Present Everywhere
While on earth, Jesus was limited to one place. From heaven, He can be with all of us through the Holy Spirit.
"Seated at the Right Hand"
This phrase doesn't mean God the Father has physical hands. It means:
- Position of Honor: The place of highest dignity
- Sharing Power: Jesus exercises divine authority
- Completed Work: You sit when your work is done
- Royal Throne: He reigns as King of Kings
What This Means for Us
We Have a Friend in High Places
Literally! Jesus, who understands human life, now advocates for us in heaven. When you pray, you're talking to someone who gets it.
Our Humanity Is in Heaven
When Jesus ascended with His human body, He brought humanity into the very heart of God. We have a "beachhead" in heaven!
Heaven Is Our True Home
Jesus' ascension shows our ultimate destination. We're not meant to stay earthbound forever. We're made for heaven.
We Have Work to Do
Jesus left us with a mission: spread the Gospel, make disciples, be His witnesses. The Ascension wasn't abandonment - it was commissioning.
He's Still With Us
"I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). Through:
- The Eucharist
- The Holy Spirit
- Prayer
- The Church
- Scripture
Living the Ascension
Lift Up Your Hearts
At Mass, when the priest says "Lift up your hearts," we respond "We lift them up to the Lord." We're joining Jesus in heaven even while on earth.
Kingdom Perspective
The Ascension reminds us to:
- Set our minds on things above
- Live as citizens of heaven
- Not get too attached to earthly things
- Remember this world isn't our final home
Confident Prayer
Knowing Jesus is at the Father's right hand:
- Pray boldly - you have an advocate
- Trust His intercession
- Know your prayers are heard
- Believe He's working for your good
Joyful Hope
The disciples returned from the Ascension "with great joy" (Luke 24:52). Why joy at Jesus leaving? Because they knew:
- He accomplished His mission
- The Spirit was coming
- He would return
- Heaven was guaranteed
Common Questions
"Where exactly is heaven?" Heaven isn't a place in our universe you could reach by spaceship. It's a different dimension of reality - God's dimension. Jesus passed from our dimension to God's.
"Why the cloud?" In the Bible, clouds often represent God's presence (like at the Transfiguration and in Exodus). The cloud showed God receiving Jesus.
"Is Jesus gone?" Physically, yes. But He's more present now than when He walked the earth. Through the Spirit, He can be with all believers simultaneously.
The Ascension and Modern Life
In our age of space exploration, the Ascension reminds us:
- There's more to reality than the material universe
- Humans are destined for something beyond Earth
- Technology can't get us to heaven - only grace can
- Our true frontier is spiritual, not just spatial
Between Ascension and Return
We live in the "between time":
- Between Jesus' first and second coming
- Between earth and heaven
- Between struggle and victory
- Between partial and complete kingdom
This tension is normal - we're citizens of heaven living on earth.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, as You ascended to heaven, lift our hearts and minds to heavenly things. Help us to live as citizens of heaven while serving You faithfully on earth. Thank You for preparing a place for us and for interceding on our behalf. May we eagerly await Your return while diligently doing Your work here. Amen.
Looking Up
The disciples stood looking up long after Jesus disappeared. Sometimes we need to do the same - not staring at the sky, but lifting our spiritual eyes to where Christ reigns. When life gets overwhelming, remember: your King is on His throne, your Priest is interceding, your Friend is preparing your eternal home. The Ascension isn't about Jesus leaving us; it's about Him going ahead to prepare the way. He's not gone - He's just getting things ready for the ultimate family reunion.
